Britain faces a “moment of reckoning” if we don t step up cyber security capabilities, warns the head of GCHQ.
In a speech today Jeremy Fleming will say developing and protecting the technologies of the future will be vital to Britain’s security and prosperity.

GCHQ Director: The UK and Allies Must Counter “Existential Threat” to the Digital Environment
The UK must work with other liberal democracies to ensure the internet and emerging digital technologies remain free and open. This is the view of Jeremy Fleming, director of GCHQ, who gave the 2021 Vincent Briscoe lecture for the Institute for Security Science and Technology at Imperial College London.
Fleming began by noting the increasingly prominent role of technology in all areas of society, which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic in the past year. While technological advancements have had enormous benefits, improving interconnectivity and convenience, they have also provided more opportunities for malicious actors to cause harm. “We must acknowledge that our adversaries benefit too. The UK and its allies risk losing control of the internet and the security of future technologies to China and Russia, who have a different and competing vision of the future, according to the head of GCHQ. 
Unless decisive action is taken, “it is increasingly clear that the key technologies on which we will rely for our future prosperity and security won’t be shaped and controlled by the west. We are now facing a moment of reckoning,” Jeremy Fleming is due to warn in a keynote speech on Friday. ....

The way in which wars are fought has transformed in the digital age. Today, nation states are increasingly leveraging cyber, artificial intelligence, drones, and other new technologies to launch attacks on their enemies. 
In response to this sea change, the UK government recently conducted a thorough review of the nation’s defenses and concluded that the British armed forces must change with the times. As such, the government plans to slash troop numbers to 72,000 by 2025, while increasing investment in technology-driven capabilities. But is this the right decision to make?
