NASSAU, BAHAMAS At least two groupings of healthcare workers who have been on the frontlines of the fight against the coronavirus since last March have expressed mixed views about being vaccinated, with some expressing a need for more information on the full impact of AstraZeneca as The Bahamas prepares for its arrival.

Eyewitness News, Consultant Physician Staff Association (CPSA) President Dr Sabriquet Pinder said consultant physicians, some of whom sit on certain subcommittees, are seeking to “tap in a bit more” with the Ministry of Health.
“So, we’re giving them some time as well, as well as the educational process or campaign that the ministry is planning to also engage in,” Pinder said. ....

DNA raises concern over AstraZeneca vaccine


NASSAU, BAHAMAS Democratic National Alliance (DNA) Leader Arinthia Komolafe has expressed concern over the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine that could be arriving in The Bahamas this month, noting that other jurisdictions around the world have delayed its approval.
“According to reports, this vaccine is between 60 percent and 75 percent effective in preventing disease,” Komolafe said in a press statement issued yesterday.
Democratic National Alliance (DNA) Leader Arinthia Komolafe.
“We note that this vaccine was approved in the UK in December 2020, approved in the EU in January 2021 and has not been approved in the US.
“Switzerland has delayed approval of the vaccine, while Germany, Italy, Sweden, Poland, Austria and France have cautioned against using the vaccine for people aged 65 and over.” ....

COVID vaccines to be deployed to Caribbean countries in March
Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Assistant Director Dr. Jarbas Barbosa said the COVAX facility will start deploying COVID-19 vaccines to Caribbean countries in March. 
“We cannot provide you with the date and the amount of doses for each country,” Barbosa said during a PAHO press briefing.
“We need to make this kind of estimation for 190 countries that are a part of COVAX. But, the deployment of the vaccines through COVAX will be made [with] equitable access.
“So, we’ll be deploying these vaccines to the countries in the Caribbean in March. We have an initiative that’s called the first wave initiative that will provide a very limited amount of the vaccine in February to some countries. This is kind of a pilot project in these countries.” ....
