Frontiers | Water Use Efficiency: A Review of Contextual and Behavioral Factors

Water withdrawals around the world have increased almost twice as fast as the population during the last century. Higher than expected water demand is leading to water scarcity and causing rapid depletion of water tables around the world. One reason behind the higher than expected demand is the inefficient use of water. Inefficient use of water affects the well-being of society, the economic stability of countries, and environmental health. Indeed, water use efficiency (WUE) is one of the pillars of sustainable development goals (SDG 6.4.1). However, progress towards achieving WUE is slow, especially for many developing countries where the degradation of natural resources is critical, economic growth is slow, and there are few strong institutions to coordinate actions. One reason behind inefficient water use is human behaviour. A variety of contextual and psychological factors underlie the behaviour. The contextual factors include socioeconomic, technical, institutional and environment ....

Council joins fight to protect vulnerable platypus

Council joins fight to protect vulnerable platypus
Whittlesea City Council is doing its part in the nation-wide fight to save the iconic platypus from becoming an endangered species.
A new project, ‘Water Quality Monitoring in Merri Creek’, will help ensure that the creek continues to be a healthy and habitable environment for aquatic animals including the platypus.
The project is a partnership between the City of Whittlesea, RMIT and Merri Creek Management Committee and is part of Council’s new Whittlesea Water For All water strategy, which was formally endorsed at the December Council Meeting.
The Merri Creek project follows the Victorian government announcement of $300,000 to restore key platypus habitat sites and create a long-term action plan. The State has also formally listed the platypus population in Victoria as ‘vulnerable’. ....

Water injustice runs deep in Australia. Fixing it means handing control to First Nations

It’s widely understood that rivers, wetlands and other waterways hold particular significance for First Nations people. It’s less well understood that Indigenous peoples are denied effective rights in Australia’s water economy.
Australia’s laws and policies prevent First Nations from fully participating in, and benefiting from, decisions about water. In fact, Indigenous peoples hold less than 1 per cent of Australia’s water rights.
A Productivity Commission report into national water policy released last week acknowledged the demands of First Nations, noting “Traditional Owners aspire to much greater access to, and control over, water resources”.
The commission suggested a suite of policy reforms. While the recommendations go further than previous official reports, they show a lack of ambition and would ensure water justice continues to be denied to First Nations. ....

Water reform report's big smile hides its big teeth: much more to do

A quick look at the Productivity Commission’s draft report on national water reform reminds me of the repeated judgment from old Mr Grace, the doddering owner of the department store in
Are You Being Served? as he headed for the door: “You’ve all done very well!”
Its review of the progress of the National Water Initiative signed by the federal and state governments in 2004 – encompassing agreements on the Murray-Darling Basin – is terribly polite, understated and relentlessly upbeat.
Apparently, governments have made “good progress” in having “largely achieved” their reform commitments. All that remains is just the need for a teensy-weensy bit of “policy renewal”. ....
