QUINCY, IL (WGEM) - As you jump in the car to head to work, there s a good chance your cell phone will be close at hand.
The Quincy Police Department said distracted driving has lead to several crashes and they are cracking down on the issue.
April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
Throughout the month, QPD will be strictly enforcing distracted driving laws.
Detective Gabriel Vanderbol said people often think of distracted driving crashes as fender-benders, but they have seen some of those turn deadly.
“Not that you mean for it to be, but if you’re distracted, not paying attention to what you’re doing, your eyes aren’t on the road, say they’re on a text message that you’re looking at and you hit somebody who is walking across the street that person is not going to fair very well, Vanderbol said. ....

The Norwich Police Department will launch a new safe driving campaign on Thursday called ‘U Drive. U Text. U Pay.’ meant to increase awareness about the dangers of distracted driving.
The campaign, created by the Norwich Police Department in partnership with the Connecticut Department of Transportation, will run through the month of April, which is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
The police department will be dedicating extra patrols, with at least one officer assigned to watching for distracted drivers throughout the city every day, according to Lt. John Perry with Norwich police.
Perry said he hopes the campaign will allow officers to have educational discussions with drivers about the importance of driving safely without distractions. ....
