In an effort to engage business leaders and equip them with the knowledge and insights required to take advantage of the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), the Institute of Export Operations and Management (IEOM) – an independent trade support institution established with the aim of boosting the drive toward a non-oil-based economy in Nigeria – hosted its first-ever business roundtable.
The event witnessed the presence of CEOs and business leaders from over 50 companies, across various economic sectors, coming together to discuss the recently operational Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement and the underlying potentials. ....

The African Continental Free Trade Agreement, AfCFTA, is a continent-wide trade pact aimed at tearing down barriers to commerce among African countries. It is focused on trade liberalisation across the continent and provides for progressive elimination of tariff and non-tariff barriers and development and promotion of regional and continental value chains.
The agreement which came into effect on the 1st of January, 2021, is expected to encourage trade activities by removing tariffs of over 90% of goods traded between member countries.
AfCFTA is expected to drive the integration of African countries into the global economy and enhance their bargaining power in international trade negotiations. ....

The Federal Government on Tuesday said apart from wealth creation, the nation’s moribund industries will be resuscitated through the $3.4tn African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement among the 54 countries in the continent.
The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, said this during the National Action Committee on AfCFTA’s sensitisation of stakeholders in Kaduna State on Tuesday.
The minister, represented by the Director, Trade Department of the ministry, Alhaji Abubakar Aliyu, said the AfCFTA was all about promoting industrialisation in the continent.
He noted the agreement could only succeed when all Nigerians take the opportunity to grab the advantage of the agreement. ....

Daily Trust - Forex ban on 42 import items remains as AfCFTA begins today

s the African Continental Free Trade Areas Agreement (AfCFTA) among the 54 participating countries commences today, January 1, 2021, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has insisted that it will sustain its foreign exchange (forex) restriction for 42 import items it had prohibited earlier.
The commencement of the pact is coming barely two weeks after the federal government reopened the land borders shut for over one year.
The AfCTA agreement allows participating countries to trade about 90 per cent of goods without any duty payment. However, each African country reserves the right to restrict importation of 10 per cent of goods that it has local capacity to produce. ....
