Men must change to reverse Japan's rapidly declining birthrate

Men must change to reverse Japan s rapidly declining birthrate
At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Japan braced itself for the devastation of its elderly population. Yet, the biggest demographic blow arrived not in the form of more people dying but fewer people being born.
Extrapolating the latest government statistics from January to March, Japan can expect 80,000 fewer babies this year a 9.2% fall in the birthrate compared to 2020 while COVID-19 has so far claimed the lives of fewer than 13,000 people.
Not only is Japan graying rapidly, but its population is also shrinking at an alarming speed. The COVID-19 Pandemic is Accelerating Japan's Population Decline: A Statistical Analysis

Русский
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 forced people to sharply curtail social interactions. Companies were pushed to adopt telework and schools to implement remote learning, helping transform how members of society work and study. The decline was particularly precipitous in May 2020, the month in which the government declared a stat ....

Japan Can Remain an Important U.S. Ally Despite Demographic Challenges

The world is aging. Some countries are not only aging, but their populations are shrinking as immigration fails to make up for rapidly falling birth rates. Many U.S. allies and security partners are among those beset by these trends. This raises questions about how decreasing fertility and increasing life expectancies will shape the future world order, and specifically the sustainability of U.S. alliances such as with Japan, whose aging and population decline will make it more difficult for the Japanese Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) to compete for the best Japanese talent as the Japanese labor pool shrinks ever smaller, and Japanese tax dollars with which to hire military personnel grow ever scarcer. ....
