Excuse Me... Some Digital Preservation Fallacies?

Excuse Me. Some Digital Preservation Fallacies?
Buzz
Excuse me…
I have been asked to write an article for the tenth anniversary of
Ariadne, a venture that I have enjoyed, off and on, since its inception in 1996 as part of the eLib Programme, of which I was then Programme Director.
Some years ago I wrote an article entitled “After eLib” [1] for
Ariadne. The original suggestion was for a follow-up “even more after eLib”; however, I now work for JISC, and that probably makes it hard to be objective!
In “After eLib”, I wrote this paragraph about digital preservation:
“Back to the Electronic Libraries Programme, what were some of my favourite projects (I won’t say best; this is definitely a subjective list)? The project of greatest personal satisfaction for me is CEDARS [2], the digital preservation project. Ensuring the long-term existence of digital materials was not an element of the Follett report, and this seemed a significant ga ....

Getting the whole picture: Finding a common language between digital preservation and conservation

1 August 2012 - 12:00
From the outset, digital preservation and conservation seem to be two very different professions. This paper explores the idea that both traditional and digital conservators not only have many commonalties but also an invaluable knowledge bank of their own areas of expertise, which should be shared between these seemingly distinct communities. Preservation Services and the Digital Preservation team from the National Library of Australia (NLA) discuss the commonalities between the two professions. Digital preservation is a relatively young and innovative discipline, while conservation has undergone its own phases of growth and innovation to become a profession that is steeped in tried and tested methodologies and techniques. This analysis of the common challenges shared by the Conservation team and the Digital Preservation team at the NLA illustrates the lessons that can be learned and shared between the two. With multiple linkages between digital preserva ....

Defining File Format Obsolescence: A Risky Journey

1 July 2008 - 12:00
An article by David Pearson and Colin Webb. This paper talks about the nature of file format obsolescence and a series of prototype questions designed by the National Library as a benchmark to help assess file format obsolescence. The article was published in the International Journal of Digital Curation, Vol 3, No 1 (2008).
Introduction
We know that in our information-obsessed world, change is everything. And yet some information is required to live beyond the moment; some information is valued beyond tomorrow’s headlines, and must be managed to be accessible, usable, and understandable in the long term.
Cycles of change in file formats impinge on even the most casual users of digital data. Technological change and format obsolescence are potentially major problems for every repository manager and data user. This is particularly true given the ever- increasing reliance on digital storage and distribution of information, the plethora of file f ....

In May 2019 we formally launched
Inspiring Generations, the first comprehensive philanthropic campaign in the history of the university and the largest ever to be launched on the island of Ireland.
Other key flagship projects of
Inspiring Generations include the Trinity St James’s Cancer Institute that will transform cancer patient care and the new E3 Institute in Engineering, Environment and Emerging Technologies that will find balanced solutions for a better world.
The response to
Inspiring Generations from our global community has been extraordinary, and we’re well on target to meet our ambitious aims in fundraising and volunteering.
An important achievement of recent months is that Dublin City Council granted planning permission for the Old Library Redevelopment, and gave it without any reservations. It will include a new research collections study centre. This follows the historic unveiling of the new Book of Kells Treasury and Dis ....

This Shabbat, we find ourselves celebrating the 7th Day of the Festival of Pesach and preparing for this week’s special reading of the account of Kriat Yam Suf, the crossing of the Sea of Reeds, which tradition posits took place on this day. And yet, though we are knee-deep in our Passover c… ....
