PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (December 28, 2000 - The National/PINA Nius Online) -Bougainville police chief Joe Bemu has been directed by his superiors to seek help from Bougainvillean leaders to recover a police vehicle commandeered at gunpoint by rebel hardliners in Arawa during Christmas.
Islands Regional Police Commander Assistant Commissioner Matthew Minok said the vehicle was allegedly commandeered by a rebel commander in Arawa, known to police.
The man is notorious for four other carjackings in the past, Mr. Minok said.
His latest acquisition is Arawa s only police vehicle - a Toyota open back Land Cruiser driven by a lone policeman at the time of the hold-up. ....

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (June 8, 2000 - The National/PINA Nius Online) -Rebel fighters used an Australian-supplied patrol boat to shell rivals, killing up to 100 people, as the Solomon Islands yesterday slid towards outright civil war.
Guerrillas from the Malaita Eagle Force (MEF) fired rounds from the boat s 50 mm cannon onto shore, blowing up an unoccupied school.
Between 50 and 100 members of the opposing Isatabu Freedom Movement (IFM) died in the attack, said MEF leader Andrew Nori.
Solomon Islands Special Minister of State Alfred Sasako also said the number of dead could be as high as 100. ....

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (June 7, 2002 - The National/PINA Nius Online) -Vote buying will prevail during polling. There will be election related violence in parts of the country. Ethnic and linguistic lines may influence a certain percentage of voting and women candidates will struggle again.

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (October 26, 1998 - The National) -The National Court on Saturday ordered the striking members of the Papua New Guinea Communication Works Union (PNGCWU) back to work, saying that the current dispute is between the workers and the State, not the employers.
Telikom (PNG) Ltd., which claimed it was losing about K 1 million (US$ 461,000) a day since October 15, took out the court injunction after the workers voted in a secret ballot on Friday to strike over a log of claims, including the transfer of about K 20 million (US$ 9.22 million) by the State to members individual contributions in the National Provident Fund (NPF). ....
