Former University of the Philippines (UP) president Dr. Jose "Pepe" Veloso Abueva passed away at his home in Antipolo on Wednesday, Aug. 18. He was 93 years old.
His death was confirmed by his daughter Rossana in a Facebook post.

MANILA More than 60 security guards at the University of the Philippines Diliman face uncertainty about their employment after the turnover of UP’s new security provider Grand Meritus Security Agency Inc.
Many dismissed security guards had been working for UP for at least a decade, with some serving for as long as 23 years.
In a recent meeting with Alliance of Contractual Employees (ACE) UP and All UP Workers Alliance, UP Chancellor Fidel Nemenzo reassured that UP will negotiate with Grand Meritus Security Agency Inc. for the maximum absorption of security guards into the new agency and their immediate assignment back to duty. ....

Several media groups and human rights defenders on Sunday, February 7, continued to call for the release of journalists belonging to publications earlier red-tagged by the Duterte government’s task force against communists.
The National Union of Journalists in the Philippines, along with AlterMidya Network, and journalists from mainstream and alternative media issued their call through a cycling event that crossed landmarks in the government’s crackdown on press freedom and dissent.

Opposition Senator Leila de Lima has filed a bill seeking to uphold academic freedom in the University of the Philippines (UP) and provide the institution the “democratic space” to ensure that exchanges and expression of ideas within its premises are free from intimidation from state forces.

DOJ won't issue legal opinion on UP-DND accord unless requested

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 25) - Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said his office will only issue a legal opinion on the abrogation of the 1989 University of the Philippines-Department of National Defense Accord if requested.
“The SOJ, as attorney general, does not issue legal opinions or commence administrative adjudication proceedings unless requested by heads of government agencies or other states instrumentalities,” he told reporters in a text message.
Considering that there is an “apparent dispute” between UP and the DND on the termination of their pact, Guevarra added that the DOJ will view any request for legal opinion as a request for administrative adjudication under the Revised Administrative Code. ....
