Private bill wants feds to tackle food waste, climate change


A West Coast MP has introduced a private member’s bill aimed at combatting Canada’s massive food waste and driving down greenhouse gas emissions.
North Island-Powell River MP Rachel Blaney tabled Bill C-283 in the House of Commons last week, calling for the development of a federal strategy to prevent food ending up in landfills as well as a national food waste awareness day.
“Canada has a lot of work to do to address the economic, social and environmental impacts of food waste,” said the NDP MP, adding the pandemic has only highlighted the importance of food security and waste management. ....

JOHN, BC, CANADA, April 1, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ An innovative food donation program has donated a milestone 50,000 pounds of food to local communities to help tackle household food insecurity. The City of Fort St. John, BC Hydro, ATCO and Salvation Army announced today that their innovative Food Donation Initiative to feed the city’s most vulnerable populations has reached the impressive milestone.
The initiative is believed to be one of the biggest donations of prepared foods ever recorded in Canada and is equal to the weight of roughly eight-and-a-half Zambonis or more than 18 Honda Civic sedans. According to methods used by Food Banks Canada, the donation is worth approximately $125,000. ....

Waste Prevention: The Environmental and Economic Benefits for Canada presents 15 specific waste-prevention business cases for six key sectors of the Canadian economy, and outlines the opportunities for positive environmental, social and economic impacts that would accrue by addressing waste at its source.

Federal Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau has picked 23 people to be on a committee to advise her on the new national food policy.
They will begin meeting March 4 to ponder how to tackle for challenges:
