RCL will further tie into the college’s proposed partnership with the City and County of Honolulu to establish a Center for Resilient Neighborhoods (
CERENE) to enhance community-based student learning through service learning, undergraduate research and internships focused on building resilience in Oʻahu neighborhoods and communities.
“Higher education around the world did not have time to plan for COVID and it slammed us all,” said Franco, who feels strongly that Kapiʻolani
CC and the University of Hawaiʻi must take the lead on sustainability. “We have time, but not much, to plan for climate change. And like COVID, climate change does not care about borders and boundaries. We need to develop both interdisciplinary and intersectoral partnerships to build a productive future for our students and our neighborhoods.” ....

The unprecedented cost of the 2018 Kilauea eruption in Hawai i reflects the intersection of distinct physical and social phenomena: infrequent, highly destructive eruptions, and atypically high population growth, according to a new study published in
Nature Communications and led by University of Hawai i at Mānoa researchers.
It has long been recognized that areas in Puna, Hawai i, are at high risk from lava flows. This ensured that land values were lower in Puna which lies within the three highest risk lava hazard zones 1, 2 and 3 which actively promoted rapid population growth. ....

The havoc wreaked by the events on September 11, 2001, and the subsequent emergency response and recovery efforts served as a turning point, transforming the way in which this country approaches disaster management and long term rebuilding efforts. Events such as 9/11 attack and subsequent disasters such as  such as Hurricane Katrina, the BP Oil Spill, Hurricane Sandy, and now, back in my home state, the Louisiana Floods, have advanced a cadre of disaster. Resilience professionals serving in roles in the public and private sectors ensure that we are prepared for and can recover from the next disaster.   ....
