Midlands law enforcement collects hundreds of pounds of medication on Drug Take Back Day

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– This past Saturday, law enforcement agencies across the state, in coordination with the DEA, held Drug Take Back Day. Several Midlands agencies say it was a successful day.
According to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department nearly 430 pounds of unused and expired medications were collected in the county. The Lexington Police Department tweeted out that they collected 10 large bags of unused medication.
Thanks to everyone who stopped @cvspharmacy and @Walgreens on Saturday during the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Ten large bags of prescription drugs were taken for proper disposal. pic.twitter.com/6s8erqZmm9 ....

While medicine cabinets might not always be at the top of a spring cleaning to-do list, it’s critical to properly dispose of unwanted or unused medications whenever possible, as this can help protect friends, family members and the environment from the harmful impacts of misuse or improper disposal of these substances.
And today offers a great opportunity to safely and properly dispose of these medications, as the 20th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at law enforcement stations around the county and state.
A biannual event that typically occurs each April and October, National Prescription Drug Take Back Day allows the public to properly dispose of any solid-form prescription drugs that are no longer used. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency partners with law enforcement agencies across the nation to provide drop off sites for pills, capsules and tablets. ....

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, about 9.7 million people misused prescription pain relievers in 2019.
The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday aims to reduce those numbers dramatically.
The Billings Elks Lodge once again teamed up with the DEA for the 20th take back that happens twice a year.
DEA statistics also show millions misused prescription stimulants, tranquilizers or sedatives.
The take back eliminates some of those, as well as making sure the drugs do not get flushed down the toilet and into the water supply. ....
