Mutant strains driving COVID surge in Odisha? 10 per cent samples are 'variants of concern'

BHUBANESWAR: The surge in coronavirus cases across the State might be fuelled by mutated strains as at least 10 per cent (pc) samples sequenced for Covid-19 strains in Odisha this year so far have been found to be variants of concern (VoC) as flagged by the National Centre for Diseases Control (NCDC).
Of the 569 samples from the State sequenced by two laboratories under Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), the highly infectious UK variant (B.1.1.7) has been detected in 24 samples and double mutant in 24 others besides five with the N440K variant.
South Africa and Brazil variants are yet to be found in the samples here. ....

The UK variant of Covid-19 was found in 70 percent of 60 samples sent to the National Centre for Diseases Control, the PGIMER said on Thursday.
“Seventy percent of the samples had UK variant of Covid-19 and 20 percent of the samples had 681 H mutant,” said Jagat Ram, the director of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, in a statement here. ....

Amid surge in COVID-19 cases, Union Territory Chandigarh has announced a ‘weekend lockdown’ between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
The decision to impose weekend curfew, among other restrictions, was taken at a meeting presided by Punjab Governor and Chandigarh’s administrator V.P. Singh Badnore.
A government order said there will be a weekend lockdown starting from 10 p.m. on April 16 till 5 a.m. on April 19. The residents must stay indoors during the lockdown period and only essential activities will be allowed. Home delivery of food will be allowed, it said. ....
