Anita Anand, Minister of Public Services and Procurement, and the Minister of Transport, Marc Garneau, announced the Government of Canada has awarded a $36.16–million contract to Elbit Systems Ltd. for the acquisition of a remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) or drone.
This contract was awarded through an open, transparent and competitive procurement process. This acquisition will play an integral role in the Government s effort to verify the practical potential of drone technology and to integrate it safely into Canadian airspace. ....

Canada has contracted Israeli firm Elbit Systems to supply Hermes StarLiner Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS).
The selection of the UAS was made following a competitive procurement process, Public Services and Procurement Canada, on behalf of Transport Canada, to support maritime environmental protection missions in the Arctic and along the Canadian Eastern and Western coasts, as part of the Canadian National Aerial Surveillance Program.
The Hermes StarLiner UAS will take-off and land in civilian airfields to perform a wide range of operations to reduce harmful environmental impacts, including detection of oil pollution, Ice Patrol and Reconnaissance, wildlife survey, Fisheries Patrol and others. ....

Ottawa will shell out more than $36 million to purchase an advanced Israeli drone to help the federal government keep an eye on the growing maritime activity in Canada’s Arctic, federal officials announced Monday.
In a joint statement, Minister of Public Services and Procurement Anita Anand and Transport Minister Marc Garneau, said the contract with Elbit Systems Ltd. for the acquisition of a Hermes 900 StarLiner remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) was awarded through an “open, transparent and competitive procurement process.” ....

The Government of Canada has awarded a $36.16 million contract to Elbit Systems Ltd. for the acquisition of a remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS). The contract, announced by Anita Anand, Minister of Public Services and Procurement, and Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, includes communications links, ground control stations, sensor packages, one remotely piloted aircraft, training, and the optional purchase of spare parts.
The contract fits into Transport Canada’s National Aerial Surveillance Program, as part of the government’s efforts to verify the use drone technology and its safe integration into Canadian airspace. “This investment will help to enhance the security and surveillance capacity under the pr ....

In early January 1968, the 483-foot cargo ship, MV Schiedyk, sank off Bligh Island in Nootka Sound after hitting an underwater shelf. All crew escaped and the captain stayed on board the Holland America Line ship until about 10 minutes before it sank, a Daily Colonist newspaper article from that time stated.
Oil leaked during the sinking, and it has been coming to the surface again in recent days. A boom was put on the water to collect fuel as government officials try to understand what is happening. ....
