Alison Evison: Diversity is key to living in a true democracy

As the results of the election are digested and discussed across the country, much attention is, quite rightly, being paid to the greater diversity of the new Scottish Parliament. A record number of women have been elected, with 58 out of the 129 seats now occupied by female MSPs. At 45 per cent female membership, the parliament is the closest to a true gender balance it has ever been and includes its first women of colour with the election of the SNP’s Kaukab Stewart and Conservative Pam Gosal. Also notable is the election of a permanent wheelchair user to the parliament for the first time, with Scottish Labour’s Pam Duncan-Glancy becoming an MSP. ....

'Elect Her' teaches students about their political voices – Grand Valley Lanthorn

On April 7, the Community Service Learning Center (CSLC), Student Senate and Running Start joined together to host an event addressing the topic of women in office and leadership. “Elect Her” was dedicated to walking students through exercises around how to run for office, why it is important, and having a discussion with a series of panelists who are currently in a variety of political positions across Michigan.
“What we do is a combination of great discussions around running for office and women in politics, and also learning concrete campaign skills exercises,” said Jess Kelly, Running Start Chief of Staff.
Running Start is a nonpartisan nonprofit that seeks to empower young women to get involved in politics, one elected female leader at a time. ....

Representation in politics takes center stage during first Elect Her panel discussion

On Dec. 8, Elect Her UVic, a club dedicated to promoting the participation of women and marginalized communities in politics, hosted their very first Women in Politics panel discussion. The panel brought together seven women who are involved in the Canadian political scene to speak about their experiences and the continued underrepresentation of women and minority groups in politics.
The hour-and-a-half panel began with a series of questions posed to the panelists by Elect Her board members and then transitioned into a Q&A discussion which allowed for audience members to ask the panelists their own questions. Total attendance fluctuated between 30 to 40 for the majority of the panel. ....
