GUWAHATI: A three-member team of the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC) will visit the Dehing Patkai Elephant Reserve, where an elephant calf died in the Joypur range due to anthrax, whose source remains unknown.
The infection was confirmed after the post-mortem of the calf, which was found dead on December 2. Home to over 200 elephants, the forest department has vaccinated about 700 animals to prevent the spread of the infection. “The three-member environment ministry team will arrive on December 15 or 16 to take the update on the situation of the infection. We have vaccinated about 200 animals a day. An programme is on to raise awareness among people,” Dibrugarh divisional forest officer (DFO), Pradipta Baruah, told TOI. ....

GUWAHATI: The post-mortem report of an elephant calf which was found dead on December 2 has revealed the presence of anthrax at the Dehing Patkai Elephant Reserve in Dibrugarh district. Home to over 200 elephants, the forest department has decided to conduct a vaccination drive to prevent the spread of the bacterial infection.
“On microscopic study methylene blue stain typical anthrax like bacilli could be demonstrated,” the post-mortem report read, directing the authorities to take measures to dispose of the carcass, isolate the area with fences, and spray proper disinfectants.
Dibrugarh divisional forest officer (DFO), Pradipta Baruah, told TOI that a vaccination drive within the radius of 5 km of the carcass will be carried out. “The carcass was burnt completely to prevent the anthrax infection from spreading to other animals. Fencing will also be done around the area,” the DFO added. ....
