Mesa County flirting with disaster if vaccine rates don't pick up

By DEBORAH and GARY STETLER
September 15, 2021 — Officials announced today that a long feared development has occurred, which is the isolation of a vaccine-resistant variant of COVID-19-Delta. This new vaccine-resistant, highly infectious variant was isolated in Mesa County and is called MC-Delta. Unfortunately, currently available vaccines do not prevent infection by MC-Delta. Infectious disease experts state that this is a predictable outcome from the situation in Mesa county: widespread community transmission and partial vaccination of the population.

We have a chance to prevent a press release like the (imaginary) one above. And yet we are at real risk of being outsmarted by an unthinking virus, not even able to reproduce itself without infecting another being. How could this happen?

Acting health minister Mmamoloko Kubayi is to give a briefing about the surging third wave of Covid-19 after an emergency meeting of the national coronavirus command council on Saturday.
The 1pm briefing was arranged at short notice amid concern that the third wave is being driven by the Delta variant of the infection that originally emerged in India.
TimesLIVE understands that proposals tabled by the health department for Gauteng, where infections are increasing exponentially, include a ban on all gatherings, a request that everyone should work from home if possible, and a two-week ban on alcohol sales.

Study examines the effects of COVID-19 on human kidney cells | News

Researchers have studied human kidney cells in the lab to examine the effects of COVID-19 on kidney health. The findings appear in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN). Many individuals who develop COVID-19 also experience kidney damage, but it's unclear if this is a direct result of viral infection or a consequence of another condition or the body's response to the infection. The researchers found that although the virus that causes COVID-19 could enter, infect, and replicate in human adult kidney cells, this did not typically lead to cell death. Prior to infection, the cells contained high levels of interferon signalling molecules, and the infection stimulated an inflammatory response that increased these molecules. In contrast, infection of kidney cells deficient in such molecules resulted in cell death, suggesting a protective effect. The cells in these experiments were grown as a three-dimensional spheroid that imitates the healthy kidney or as a two-dimensional layer that mimics the cells of an acutely injured kidney. Cells that mimicked an acutely injured kidney were more prone to infection and additional injury but not cell death.
