Letter thanking Katherine Road food bank, Forest Gate

Partnered with the James Lind Alliance, the charity will find out what matters to us most so research can make the biggest difference to our lives.
With such limited funds for stroke research, worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s vital that we come together and make our voices heard. If you’re a stroke survivor, or you care for or work with someone affected by stroke, join me and speak up for stroke.
Don’t miss your chance, visit: stroke.org.uk/jla by the deadline of March 21.

Give up chocolate to help BHF
Emma Day, head of Dechox, British Heart Foundation, writes:
This March, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) is encouraging the British public to take on their Dechox challenge and give up chocolate and other sugary snacks for the month of March. Dechox Warriors will help to raise life saving funds for the 7.6 million people in the UK living with heart and circulatory diseases.
A recent survey carried out by the BHF, revealed that biscuits were the UK’s favourite sugary snack (42 per cent), closely followed by chocolate (41pc).
With the findings demonstrating just how important biscuits and chocolate are to us, giving them up will be no easy feat.  ....

Government accused of 'insulting thousands of workers' over axing of union learning fund

THE government has been accused of “insulting hundreds of thousands of workers” after confirming plans to axe funding for Britain’s most successful workplace training scheme.
Education Secretary Gavin Williamson refused to reconsider withdrawing £12 million granted to the Union Learning Fund (ULF) when asked in the Commons on Monday.
Unionlearn provides skills training which improves the lives and productivity of 200,000 workers a year.
It is supported by major employers such as Tesco, Heathrow airport, Tata Steel, FirstBus, CrossCountry, British Steel and Arla Foods, and administered by trade unions.
Makerfield Labour MP Yvonne Fovargue MP asked in the Commons: “Would the Secretary of State reconsider the decision to scrap this highly successful programme and fund it through the national skills programme?” ....

We will fight to protect land for deer
A Romford resident, full name and address supplied, writes:
Oh deer! Once again, Havering takes the surgeon’s knife to Harold Hill.
It seems enough is NOT enough when it comes to the removal of much loved and used green space which has been a blessing to so many over the last year. It seems bursting-at-the-seams doctors’ surgeries are, in fact, not bursting at the seams and it seems, the deer population has a low cash value.
That value is packaged up as a very important parcel of land off Priory Road and a pivotal crossing point for the many wild stags and does who use it to access from the Manor to the fields around Harold Hill, driving a diversity of wildlife that is enjoyed by all residents and visitors.   ....
