RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) The North Carolina High School Athletic Association would be replaced by a proposed state commission to oversee interscholastic public school sports in a measure unveiled Tuesday in a legislative committee.
The bill, which received a hearing by a Senate education panel, comes after Republican lawmakers have publicly questioned association leaders this year about the nonprofit s authority and assets of nearly $42 million as of June 2020. It s the wealthiest group of its kind in the country, according to legislative data. Senators say that contrasts with schools struggling to raise money for uniforms and equipment and the fines they can pay the association for eligibility violations.

Solar farms, he announced on the House floor yesterday, make deer meat inedible.
“I’ve been told if deer eat vegetation around these things the meat might not be fit for human consumption,” Pittman (R-Cabarrus) said on the House floor yesterday, in opposition to House Bill 951.

While folklore and falsehoods aren’t the best bases for policymaking, a ‘no’ vote is a ‘no’ vote, and bill opponents needed every one they could muster.
Known in some corners as the “Super Secret Energy Bill” for the covert way in which it was crafted, the measure, is opposed by the state’s major manufacturers and industries, businesses, environmental groups, and public-interest organizations.

Bill to retire coal-fired plants gets initial NC House OK

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Legislation that could shape North Carolina electricity production for decades received initial approval Wednesday by the state House, with the narrow majority rejecting arguments that the measure relies too much on natural gas or could send customer rates soaring.
Republicans pushing the bill — shaped by Duke Energy, customer and business groups and renewable energy boosters — have said it promotes an all-of-the-above energy strategy while reducing carbon dioxide emissions and keeping power reliable and affordable.
The anchor of the legislation, approved 58-50, is the early retirement of inefficient coal-fired power plants at five locations, to be phased out through the end of 2030. These and other alterations in the bill would contribute to a 62% reduction in power-sector greenhouse gas emissions in the state by the end of the decade compared to 2005 levels.
