(Tokyo) – Japanese business entities should stop their participation in a commercial real estate project involving Myanmar’s abusive military, Human Rights Now, Human Rights Watch, Japan International Volunteer Center, Justice For Myanmar, and Mekong Watch said today. The proposed Y-Complex in Yangon is being constructed on land leased from the country’s armed forces, the Tatmadaw, whose long record of abuses has worsened since the February 1, 2021, military coup.

The Myanmar military regime formed an official national governing body on Tuesday, one day after staging a coup against the democratically elected National League for Democracy (NLD)-led government.
Christened the “State Administrative Council” (SAC), the 11-member body is largely made up of military officials and led by military chief-cum-coup leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
Among the 11 council members are three civilians. Two of these New National Democracy Party chairman U Thein Nyunt and National Democratic Force chairman U Khin Maung Swe are members of parties seen as political foes of the ousted NLD. Yangon, Feb 3 : The Office of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services announced formation of a new 11-membered State Administration Council under Section 419 of Constitution late on Tuesday.
Chaired by Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Sen-Gen Min Aung Hlaing, the council is comprised of 10 other members including Vice-Senior General Soe Win as deputy chair, the Xinhua news agency reported.
