The Union Budget 2021 was presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1. The budget for the next fiscal year starting April 1 had several growth-oriented measures including major focus on infrastructure development across all sectors. A chunk of this year’s budget outlay will be used for enhancing infrastructure across sectors. FM Sitharaman also proposed a higher budget allocation of Rs 2.23 lakh crore for healthcare in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Besides the higher allocation, a new healthcare plan was also announced. Some key sectors like defence and agriculture are also got a boost in Nirmala Sitharaman’s third budget announcement. While the government’s spending has gone up in the budget, much of it was aimed at boosting infrastructure to support jobs and development. However, no major tax changes were announced in view of the tight revenue position and higher spending. ....

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that the move is being undertaken for greater domestic value addition, as the mobile manufacturing industry of India continues to grow.

Domestic manufacturing of electronics have grown exponentially, and India is now even exporting mobile phones and chargers to other markets, said Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at her Union Budget 2021 speech earlier today. In conjunction, Sitharaman announced that as the government targets greater “domestic value addition”, “some parts” of the mobile manufacturing process will be imposed with a 2.5 percent duty going forward, instead of the fully exempted taxation in this sector so far. ....

The Ministry of Railways has demanded gross budgetary support (GBS) of about Rs 75,000 crore from the Ministry of Finance in the upcoming budget.
The GBS sought by the railway ministry is about 7 per cent higher than GBS of Rs 70,250 crore allocated for the financial year 2020-21 in last year s budget by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. It may be noted that the GBS was at Rs 69,967 crore in 2019-20 and Rs 55,088 crore in 2018-19. ....
