BMC unveils Rs 39,038 crore budget; here are the key highlights

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (
BMC), which is the richest civic body in the country, on Wednesday unveiled its Rs 39,038.83 crore
budget for the year 2021-22. The total budget estimates for the next financial year are 16.74 per cent more than the last fiscal, when it had presented a budget of Rs 33,441.02 crore.
During 2021-22, the proposed capital expenditure is Rs.18,750 crore. From this, work of various STP projects, coastal road, GMLR, Hydro - Solar Power Project at Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Middle Vaitarna Dam, desalination project, rejuvenation of Mithi river, rejuvenation of Dahisar, Poisar and Walbhat rivers, upgradation of Deonar Abattoir, 12 bridges over railway, six new bridges, and upgradation of five hospitals will be undertaken. ....

Markets have been on fire after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented Budget proposals for fiscal 2021-22 (FY22) with the S&P BSE Sensex surging over 3,300 points in just two sessions. Most brokerages have given a thumbs-up to the proposals, calling them ‘pro-growth’ that will entail a capex-driven revival of Covid-19 impacted Indian economy, even though fiscal deficit and the borrowing programme of the government for the next financial year came in a tad higher-than-expectation.

The Union Budget 2021 was presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1. The budget for the next fiscal year starting April 1 had several growth-oriented measures including major focus on infrastructure development across all sectors. A chunk of this year’s budget outlay will be used for enhancing infrastructure across sectors. FM Sitharaman also proposed a higher budget allocation of Rs 2.23 lakh crore for healthcare in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Besides the higher allocation, a new healthcare plan was also announced. Some key sectors like defence and agriculture are also got a boost in Nirmala Sitharaman’s third budget announcement. While the government’s spending has gone up in the budget, much of it was aimed at boosting infrastructure to support jobs and development. However, no major tax changes were announced in view of the tight revenue position and higher spending. ....

Union Budget 2021 will be presented in paperless form for the first time, with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman seen holding a Made in India tablet in a red case instead of the conventional brown briefcase or bahi khata as she posed for the media ahead of the Parliament session.
Sitharaman had broken away from tradition when she replaced the briefcase and opted for the traditional bahi khata (a ledger wrapped in a red cloth) while presenting the Budget in 2019. Then she had said the Modi government was not a suitcase-carrying government , seen as a retort to Congress suit-boot sarkar jibe. ....
