COVID in Panama City: Cemeteries filling up as deaths mount in Florida


PANAMA CITY Some area funeral homes have seen their workloads spike in the past year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but plenty of cemetery plots are still available.
While Panama City-owned cemeteries Hillside Cemetery, Greenwood Cemetery, Oakland Cemetery and Millville Cemetery are out of plots, those were bought years if not decades ago, officials said. Instead, the spike in deaths caused by the virus still can be handled by the several privately-owned cemeteries in the area, they said. 
Russell Wright, owner of Russell A. Wright Sr. Mortuary, said he has had a heavier workload because of COVID-19.
Here in Panama City locally, I ve been in business for 21 years and I found my volume has increased significantly when COVID became a pandemic, Wright said. I ve had four or five services on the week, and with the size of Panama City I haven t had that much. ....

Father Ronald Braud, 81, was a priest with a listening heart

Father Ronald J. Braud, a retired priest of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, died Jan. 10  at Chateau de Notre Dame. He was 81 and had served for 56 years as a diocesan priest, including 20 years as a chaplain and religion teacher at Archbishop Blenk High School in Marrero.
“He was someone who was calm, cool and collected,” said Msgr. Lanaux Rareshide, the homilist at a Jan. 18 Funeral Mass who was friends with Father Braud in the Jesus Caritas Priests’ Fraternity. “He was a very pleasant fellow. In his final years, he had some pain in his life with medical problems.” ....

Jimmy Luther Mays went to be with his Lord and Savior on Dec. 27, 2020, surrounded by his family.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020 at Grimes Funeral Chapels. Services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020 at Riverside Church of Christ with interment following at Garden of Memories Cemetery.
Jimmy was born Oct. 25, 1944 in Big Spring, Texas, to Romy and Nora Lee Mays. He married the love of his life, Dorinda Kay Medford Mays on March 14, 1964.
They moved to the Houston area where he worked for NASA and received recognition for his contribution toward the success of the Apollo 11 Mission. He went on to work for Cosden Oil and then later Fina Oil. He continued to pursue new endeavors and moved his family to Huntington Beach, California. This move would eventually change his focus from Oil industry to the plastics industry. He worked with the plastics industry pioneer Al Wallace, to develop the manufacturing p ....
