ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) -Representation from Albany Police, Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office, Dougherty County Police, Albany State University (ASU) Police, Albany Tech Police, and the Dougherty County District Attorney were all part of a Police Community Relations Workshop at ASU.
These officials took the hot seat on some hot topics Tuesday night.
During part of the event, Albany Police Chief Michael Persley said, “police and community are not different. They’re one and the same. So the simplest form of community policing is a neighborhood watch.” ....

Dougherty Co. child support court moves to new location

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edward announced on Thursday that child support court will be moved to the Department of Human Services (DHS) Building.
The DHS Building is located at 200 W. Oglethorpe Boulevard, across the street from the Albany Police Department.
This is due to the
Child support cases scheduled for May 13 will be heard at the DHS Building at the same time as the recipient’s initial notice.
Child support DNA testing will be conducted on May 20 at the DHS Building and child support court cases will be heard on May 27, also at the same time as the recipient’s initial notice. ....

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Chief Circuit Judges in the area could soon decide whether jury trials can take place. The State Supreme Court plans to make the announcement on March 9.
Greg Edwards, Dougherty County District Attorney, said the decision will be based on current COVID-19 trends.
Grand juries are meant to hear a case and decide whether charges stick.
Jury trials are used to acquit or convict the case.

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Greg Edwards, Dougherty County District Attorney, said the COVID-19 surge, as well as all towns not having the ability to follow CDC guidelines, were some of the reasons for stopping grand juries.
In the meantime, some probation revocations, bond hearings and pre-trial motions are being taken care of.

“Pre-trial motions are beneficial, so everyone will know what they can properly argue or not argue when we go to court,” said Edwards. ....
