New York drops challenge to Indian Point sale to Holtec

New York has dropped its challenge to the sale of the Indian Point nuclear power plant in return for the new owner’s guarantee to keep $400 million in a decommissioning trust fund for the next 10 years.
The agreement reached Wednesday appears to resolve the state’s biggest concern with the Indian Point sale – that trust fund money could dry up during the teardown, sticking ratepayers with the tab for a cleanup expected to take at least 12 years.
The last of Indian Point’s two working reactors are slated to shut down at the end of the month, when ownership of the Buchanan plant shifts from Entergy to Holtec International, a New Jersey-based decommissioning firm. ....

Westchester County, New York – On March 11, 2021, the New York State Police conducted a targeted Speed enforcement detail on State Route 9 in the Town of Cortlandt and the Village of Croton-on-Hudson.

The operation was conducted in furtherance of our mission to ensure highway safety for all users of the roadway. A total of 26 tickets were issued during the targeted enforcement period, 23 of which were for speed-related offenses.
Speeding is listed as a contributing factor in nearly one-third of all fatal crashes in New York State. According to the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research (ITSMR) at the University at Albany, in 2017, 301 people were killed and 18,178 were injured in New York State in speed-related crashes. A task force in Westchester County has issued its draft police reform report and recommendations. A few of the task force members are discussing some of the recommendations in the 179-page report.
Shortly before New York Governor Andrew Cuomo issued executive order 203, which tasked communities with putting together a Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative Plan by April 1st, Democratic Westchester County Executive George Latimer convened a task force to implement police reform following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in police custody last May. Once Cuomo issued his order, Latimer aligned his plans with the governor’s mandate.
“We owe it to George Floyd, and we owe it to that moment in that night in May when a tragedy happened, and we didn’t turn our back from the tragedy, we turned to work to deal with that tragedy,” Latimer says. ....

NYS AG Sues NRC Over Indian Point Decomissioning Matters

New York state Attorney General Letitia James on Friday filed a lawsuit against the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The suit comes after the NRC denied the state’s petition for a public hearing on the decommissioning of the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Westchester County.
In its January 15 decision, the NRC denied requests for hearings and to intervene in the license transfer from Entergy Nuclear to Holtec International, as owner, and Holtec Decommissioning International, as decommissioning operator.
Attorney General James had filed a petition on behalf of the state in February to intervene in the license transfer, arguing that the transfer violates the NRC s rules for approving a nuclear facility license transfer. The Democrat also requested that the NRC hold a public hearing on whether the proposed Holtec licensees have demonstrated financial qualification, whether they have shown adequate decommissioning financial assurance, and whether their decommissi ....
