South Portland City Council resolution condemns anti-Asian violence
Councilors said they were against any form of racism and bigotry, and voiced support of the Asian American community.

SOUTH PORTLAND At the Human Rights Commission’s request, the city council passed a resolution condemning acts of hate against Asian Americans on April 20.
“The City of South Portland pauses in its work to condemn recent acts of violence and terror targeting Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders,” the resolution said. “We unequivocally grieve the loss of life and stand in solidarity with our Asian American and Pacific Islander residents in our community.” ....

Portland gets OK to build Confined Aquatic Disposal (CAD) Cell

The City of Portland has received state and federal approvals to build Maine’s first Confined Aquatic Disposal (CAD) Cell in Portland Harbor to address long-term dredging needs.  
The City and its partners, the City of South Portland, the State of Maine, and the Portland Harbor Commission, have been working for years to find a solution for dredging the piers, wharfs and waterfront properties in Portland Harbor.  
“We’re losing the best berths in the Harbor,” said
Bill Needelman, Portland’s Waterfront Coordinator. “Commercial vessels want to be in protected water and that’s where sedimentation is the most rapid.” ....

The City of South Portland, Maine, won a major legal victory at the end of August when a federal judge ruled that the city’s effective ban on tar sands oil did not violate the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution. The decision, like a similar one in Portland, Oregon, has potentially widespread implications for other communities fighting fossil fuel infrastructure projects within their borders.
In 2014 South Portland passed the Clear Skies Ordinance, which prohibited loading crude oil onto tankers in the city’s harbor. The ordinance was a response to efforts to reverse the direction of the Portland Montreal pipeline, which would allow its owner, Portland Pipe Line Corporation, to import tar sands oil from Canada and export it from the city of about 25,000 via ship. ....

$6M, 101-room South Portland hotel planned amid its own competition


The owner of four South Portland hotels wants to build another between two of them, and will present plans for the $6 million project to the city’s Planning Board Wednesday night.
New Gen Holding Co. LLC is seeking site plan approval for a 101-room TownePlace Suites hotel at 70 Maine Mall Road, an undeveloped two-acre lot next to a Home2 Suites hotel on the east, at 50 Maine Mall Road, and a Comfort Inn on the west, at 90 Maine Mall Road. The area is surrounded by the mall, the Maine Turnpike and Portland International Jetport.
