Massachusetts House of Representatives passes fiscal 2022 budget

Last month, the Massachusetts House of Representatives passed its Fiscal Year 2022 budget. This budget responds to the needs of residents and makes investments that set the state on a path toward economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Funded at $47.716 billion, the House’s FY22 budget continues its strong commitment to cities and towns, and includes significant investments in education, supportive services for vulnerable populations, and workforce and economic development, among other priorities. After three days of debate and over a thousand proposed amendments, the budget passed by the House of Representatives 160-0.
The FY22 House budget reflects the local aid commitment recently made by the House and Senate. It increases Unrestricted General Government Aid by $39.5 million over FY21, for a total of $1.168 billion, and Chapter 70 education funding by $219.6 million over FY21, for a total of $5.503 billion, fully funding the fi ....

Mazzarella: Bidding, construction to start soon on new police station

The City of Leominster will soon go out to bid for construction of a new police station another sign that a project discussed for decades is moving forward.
Mayor Dean Mazzarella said in a recent interview the city is “getting ready to go out to bid” for building the structure on Central Street. The bidding process “takes several months,” he said.
Meanwhile, a legal notice was published two weeks ago seeking qualified contractors and subcontractors for the project.
Depending on how long the bidding process takes, Mazzarella said, construction could start later this year and proceed “as far as they can, obviously, before winter settles in.” Building the new police station will take about a year, he said. ....

Old Leominster High nominated for National Register of Historic Places

Secretary of the Commonwealth William F. Galvin has announced that the Massachusetts Historical Commission approved the former Leominster High School for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places at a recent meeting.
The nomination will be submitted to the National Register of Historic Places at the National Park Service for final consideration and designation.
“The Massachusetts Historical Commission is dedicated to preserving the Commonwealth’s rich historic, architectural, archaeological, and cultural resources,” Galvin said. “The former Leominster High School building is a landmark in the city and its conversion to affordable housing supported by historic tax credits gives it a new life and a new value to the community.” ....

Andrea Freeman announces candidacy for mayor of Leominster

Andrea M. Freeman announced Thursday, Dec. 10 that she established a campaign committee with the Massachusetts Oﬃce of Campaign & Political Finance to run for mayor of the City of Leominster.
Freeman is running to work with Leominster residents and community leaders to improve its public schools, attract more living-wage jobs, and to position the city for a future as rich as its storied past. Freeman believes her coalition-building skills and relationships with leaders in many sectors throughout the state can help Leominster prosper in a post-pandemic economy.
