Franklin takes over regional shellfish program - The Ellsworth American

Franklin takes over regional shellfish program
SULLIVAN After a brief search, the Frenchman Bay Regional Shellfish Program has found a new home in Franklin.
The program formed more than a decade ago to act as a steward over the mudflats in Hancock, Lamoine, Sorrento, Sullivan, Trenton, Franklin and Ellsworth after the region became inundated with clammers from up and down the coast who were fleeing red tide closures in other parts of the state.
While none of the municipalities could likely manage a shellfish program to protect the resource on its own, the seven together could get a handle on the flats, with the city of Ellsworth handling the administrative duties, licensing and enforcement. ....

Nome Council Postpones Vote on Funding for City Hall Heating and Ventilation

During a sparsely attended Nome City Council session, the council opted not to spend any money in their first regular meeting of 2021.
The City has received $200,000 from Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation Community Benefits Share. In the past, Nome has typically given that NSEDC money to community groups and non-profits.
But this year, City Manager Glenn Steckman said Nome has put off certain maintenance projects for too long. He recommended upgrading the 45-year-old heating and ventilation systems in City Hall.
“A lot of money has been directed back out to the community, which I fully support, but we also need to take care of some of the needs in our own house.” ....

City manager talks on Council agenda - The Ellsworth American

City manager talks on Council agenda
ELLSWORTH The City Council met on Jan. 5 solely to enter into an executive session to discuss personnel matters, as allowed under state law. Chairman Dale Hamilton had earlier told The American the session’s focus would be further discussion of a proposed joint city manager-police chief position and negotiations with current Police Chief and interim City Manager Glenn Moshier.
The council will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday, Jan. 11, with agenda item 14 set for “discussion and action from the executive session held on Jan. 5.” Hamilton declined to answer questions prior to Monday’s public meeting. ....

Nome Bars To Stay Closed, Common Council Devises Service Worker Relief Plan

Nome’s bars will remain closed for the holidays. That’s following a 5-1 vote by the Nome Common Council on Monday. Under the current plan, bars would be able to reopen on January 4th – at the earliest. Restaurants are expected to remain closed until next Monday (Dec. 21) , along with a restriction on public gatherings of over ten people.
Only Councilmember Jennifer Reader rejected the closures.
The measures and closures are meant to slow the spread of COVID-19. But recognizing the economic hardship for business owners and those working in the service industry, they’ve agreed to provide a $600 weekly stipend for those affected by the restrictions. That vote did pass unanimously. Nome City Manager, Glenn Steckman, says the funds will come from the city’s share of federal pandemic relief received under the CARES Act. ....
