Gaithersburg might use COVID-19 relief funding to plug revenue gap


First half of money will be part of FY21 budget, city manager says

Gaithersburg might use more than $11.5 million in federal COVID-19 relief funding to help make up for lost revenue during the pandemic, City Manager Tanisha Briley said on Monday.
The $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, passed by Congress in March and signed by President Joe Biden, sets aside $350 billion for state and local governments.
Gaithersburg is one of 19 municipalities in Montgomery County receiving funding from the legislation. The county government is receiving more than $200 million.
Briley told the City Council that Gaithersburg has received about half of its allotment, and the second half will be issued in May 2022. ....

Gaithersburg might end this year with about $4.5 million less in revenue than expected, City Manager Tanisha Briley said.
Briley told the Mayor and City Council on Tuesday that through December, Gaithersburg had collected $45.5 million in revenue 66% of the projected total for fiscal year 2021. (The city’s fiscal year runs from July 1 through June 30.)
“At this time, it looks as though we will end this year down around $4.5 million, or 6% below what we budgeted for revenue,” she said.
Briley, who started her job with the city in September, said that when the FY 21 budget was adopted  in June, less was known about the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. ....
