Experts Release Agenda for Next Mayor to Better Use Technology in Solving City Problems

A report released Wednesday provides technological solutions for some of the city’s myriad problems and examines the barriers to their adoption, with the hope of provoking intense debate about urban technology in this year’s municipal election.
The 124-page report, titled “Rebooting NYC: An Urban Tech Agenda for the Next Administration,” is a first draft released by Cornell Tech’s Urban Tech Hub, part of the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute located on Roosevelt Island. It provides the beginnings of a roadmap for utilizing existing technology to improve the city’s provision of services, optimizing the built environment, and expanding New Yorkers’ engagement in civic life, among other goals. The report was created after interviews with more than 100 technology and civic experts from New York and around the world, according to its publishers. ....

The controversial Upper West Side condo tower that a judge ruled was built too tall may avoid the wrecking ball after all.
A New York State appellate court on Tuesday reversed a lower court’s ruling that would have forced the developers of 200 Amsterdam Avenue to remove about 20 floors from the nearly complete 52-story tower.
The appeals court rejected the argument by opponents of the tower that the developers illegally gerrymandered a zoning lot to cobble together more development rights than the project was entitled to.
“Today’s unanimous decision is an unequivocal affirmation that 200 Amsterdam’s permit was lawfully issued,” developer Steven Pozycki of SJP Properties said in a statement. ....

A diverse coalition of more than 80 advocacy groups and nonprofit organizations is asking the next generation of city leaders to imagine what it would take to install 500 more miles of bike lanes, 1,000 miles of year-round open streets, and one block of car-free streets in front of every public school in New York City.
On Monday, the group Transportation Alternatives issued a challenge it calls “NYC 25x25.” The advocacy group is asking the next mayor, city council and borough presidents to commit to converting 25% of streets currently used by vehicles into other purposes, by 2025. ....
