Proposed law could change hiring practices at Schenectady County Sheriff’s Department, other agencies | The Daily Gazette

A newly proposed piece of legislation in the state Senate could bar law enforcement agencies from hiring officers who’ve left or were fired from previous agencies. 
The legislation, released May 3, came just days after the Schenectady County Sheriff Dominic Dagostino fired his stepson Daniel Coppola following a driving while intoxicated arrest in Colonie on April 26.
A Manhattan Democrat, State Sen. Brian Benjamin originated the proposal: “I believe police officers should be held to a higher standard because the nature of their power is so great,” he said. ....

Police are embracing body cameras. Yarmouth chief calls them top priority.


Yarmouth Police Chief Frank Frederickson views the officers under his command as family.
“These officers are my kids, and if that s my son or daughter out there, I want them to have this,” Frederickson told the Yarmouth Select Board this week. 
He was talking about body-worn cameras.
Once a point of contention between law enforcement and police reform advocates, Frederickson said that departments across the country are increasingly embracing the technology as integral to police operations  and his department is one of them.
“I can t stress enough, we really should do whatever we can to get this enacted,” he said. “We owe it to our officers to do this, to give them the tools that they need.”  ....
