1st Citywide Tree Inventory Underway In Boston

Earlier this year, the Boston Parks Department launched our first ever Urban Forest Plan. Our hope is that this Urban Forest Plan will help prioritize, preserve, and grow the tree canopy throughout the City of Boston for decades to come.

The Boston Urban Forest Plan will be a year-long effort made up of several phases. The first part of our work is an urban forest
street tree inventory an assessment of the existing conditions of the public street trees throughout the City. This canopy inventory kicked off earlier this year, carried out by a team of five trained arborists from PlanIt Geo. These arborists are currently traveling each City street, counting, mapping, and assessing each tree. ....

Let's think trees as part of cleanup of the X-way mess

Last week’s column about the lack of maintenance of the state’s property alongside the Southeast Expressway and the MBTA tracks received quite a response. The trash and graffiti were certainly noticed by residents, and there were calls by readers to organize clean ups and also to demand that the state maintain its property.
The most intriguing response came from Savin Hill’s Liz MacNeil. “I have been thinking trees,” she said. “The noise and pollution of the expressway, commuter trains, and Red Line have helped steer my thoughts that way. At the moment, we seem to be moving backwards. Trees are being sacrificed to new construction, and new ones, even if/when they are being planted, can’t compensate for the carbon removal, pollution reduction, and summer cooling effects of the mature trees they replace. ....

High-speed rail enters new phase
The California High-Speed Rail project got its best news in over a decade when election victories in Georgia handed control of the U.S. Senate to the Democrats. Coupled with ‘Amtrak Joe’s’ inauguration, things are now looking bright for completing the project. In that context, next week the Authority will release its newest business plan update.
According to a release and update letter from the agency’s CEO, the project will soon have spent “100 percent of the required state match for $2.5 billion in federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds achieved in the first quarter of 2021 (22 months ahead of deadline)” meaning, despite the misinformation sown by HSR opponents, the project is fulfilling its obligations and will continue to be eligible for federal investments. In addition, things are on schedule for the all-important “Environmental clearance of our first two segments into Los Angeles County with the Reco ....
