Cargo traffic through Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, with scores of jets arriving daily from Asia.
They brought with them computers, cell phones, pharmaceuticals and other products in high demand from homebound people in the Lower 48, airport officials said. ....

Alaska’s struggling economy shows no obvious signs of ‘organic’ recovery, UAA economist says

Alaska’s economy isn’t getting worse, but it could be a long way from substantial improvement.
Many of the indicators showing improvements in recent months are more tied to the normal seasonality of the state’s economy and less about a recovery from the forces of the pandemic, said Mouchine Guettabi, an economist with the University of Alaska Anchorage Institute for Social and Economic Research.
“Our losses ballooned over the summer and then shrunk back down in fall and the winter. That doesn’t mean things are getting better; it just means that we’re losing, or had, fewer jobs in the economy,” Guettabi told a virtual audience during a presentation hosted April 9 by the Alaska policy think-tank Commonwealth North. ....

The calls for a boycott started as soon as word got out last month that Alaska Industrial Hardware was requiring workers get vaccinated for COVID-19.
The business is a fully owned subsidiary of Bering Straits Native Corp., where the board of directors in mid-March voted to mandate vaccinate for all employees unless they are approved for medical or religious exemptions.
Officials say the board’s decision reflected the disproportionate toll the virus is taking on Alaska Native people, particularly elders.
AIH employs 200 people in eight locations across the state four in Anchorage and Eagle River that sell everything from work gloves and Xtratuf boots to air compressors and power tools. ....
