Public Health Employees Experience Burn Out From A Year Of The Pandemic

Before the pandemic hit, not many people knew each county had a public health officer or what they did exactly. Natrona County Public Health Officer Dr. Mark Dowell has been in that position since the late 1990s.
I would oversee sexually transmitted disease clinics. I would do immigration physicals. We would look at reproductive planning, these kinds of things, Dowel described.
But all of that changed when the pandemic hit. Public health employees all of the sudden were on the front line of the fight.
It was endless phone calls, endless hours, endless types of stress, and huge policy making decisions right on the fly, said Dowell. And having to do all the meetings with public officials, trying to convince people that the public health policies were the way to go for our county, and having to be in the media a lot, and having my life threatened. ....

UW-Casper Commencement Ceremony May 13 for Fall 2020, Spring 2021 Graduates | News

Graduation ceremonies for fall and spring University of Wyoming-Casper graduates will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 13, at the David Street Station outdoor location.
The UW-Casper in-person outdoor commencement will follow the state, Natrona County Public Health and UW COVID-19 guidelines.
The ceremony will emulate UW’s main campus mitigation strategies with an abbreviated program of speakers, followed by the awarding of degrees to graduates, says Brent Pickett, UW-Casper dean. There will be no processional or recessional marches, and the stage party will be limited in number.
The graduation will be a catered event with staff serving guests, Pickett adds. ....

Wyoming's COVID Hospitalizations Drop to Fewer Than 85 – Sheridan Media

Wyoming’s coronavirus-related hospitalizations have continued to decline since hitting a peak of more than 230 in late November, with only 84 people hospitalized as of Thursday.
According to the Wyoming hospital tracker, this was a slight increase over the 81 patients hospitalized as of Wednesday, but still is a decline from the beginning of the week, when around 88 patients were hospitalized due to the virus.
Natrona County Public Health Officer Dr. Mark Dowell credited the decrease in hospitalizations to the use of face masks and social distancing.
“We’re maintaining low levels in the hospital, at around 11 to 15 patients at any one time,” Dowell said. “[This] has incredibly improved due to the community masking up and doing their job. For that, I applaud you completely.” ....

For almost a year, Susie Scott hasn t been able to volunteer or see her children without a mask for longer than five minutes.

Scott, a resident of Albany County, is over 70 and has an underlying health problem that puts her at high risk for serious illness if she were to contract COVID-19. Since December, when it was announced vaccines were going to be made available, she has eagerly been waiting for her turn.
