TBIFF 2021 student film winners announced | News, Sports, Jobs

ALPENA For the second year in a row, Nick Lusardi has been on the winning team in the Thunder bay International Film Festival Student Film Competition. But this year, he won both first and second place with his individual submissions, “Mermaids Specifically” and “Kitchen Sink.”
Lusardi’s films take a creative approach to the theme #FreshWaterIs, which was the prompt for each film entry.
“I was sort of experimenting,” said Lusardi, 15. “I really wanted to enter again, and do something a little bit bigger and better than what I did last year. So I was really trying to explore the concept in a creative way. Because I knew there’d be lots of people who thought of ‘FreshWaterIs’ in a very literal way and so I wanted to try to think of it in more of a creative fashion.” ....

ALPENA – There’s really no reason to leave your house from Jan. 20 to 31, thanks to this year’s Thunder Bay International Film Festival.
The 9th annual TBIFF will not only feature national and international films about our oceans, but many free films about the Great Lakes, as well.
Offered exclusively online this year because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the festival begins Wednesday and runs through Jan. 31. More than 50 films are viewable from the comfort of your own home. ....

Lake Huron Coastal Conservation getting some grant money

A number of organizations are receiving funding from a program created by community foundations (including Community Foundation Grey Bruce) and conservation partners from both Canada and the United States.
The Lake Huron Forever was established in 2017 to advance water quality protection and healthy sustainable communities on both sides of the lake.
They recently awarded $50,000 to three organizations: the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation ($10,000), Friends of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary ($25,000), and the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy ($15,000).
The Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation will use the funds to support their Green Ribbon Champion program, a restoration and stewardship program providing advice, support, and resources to shoreline residents. ....
