We try to make our videos engaging and humorous, Jae Kim said.

Black History Month: Marie Van Brittan Brown of Queens invented the home security system


Brown s invention paved the way for the high-tech security systems used today.
She died in 1999 at the age of 76.
Over the years, her invention has been cited in 32 other patent applications.

Plainfield school to be named after civil rights icons Charles Booker and Anna Booker who fought segregation


Sandra Bookman reports on the archive helping future generations learn about the many accomplishments of African-Americans.
They brought the suit against the Plainfield Board of Education after numerous attempts failed to correct the imbalance in education for African American students in Plainfield.
Anna Booker said the books were outdated, the education was inferior, and the children were feeling neglected by their schools.
With the help of the NAACP and its lead litigator Robert Carter, the Bookers sued and won.
The case was decided on June 28, 1965, and changed how the students were placed in schools and how funding was allocated.
It also changed how the boards were chosen. ....

NEW YORK (WABC) Dr. Patricia Bath was an ophthalmologist and scientist who helped pave the way for future generations of African American women in the field.
Our eyes help us navigate the world, but as we age, cataracts can develop, which makes it difficult to see.
Thankfully, Dr. Bath saw the solution.
In 1981, she invented a device and technique using a laser that revolutionized cataract surgery.
Dr. Bath shattered the glass ceiling, the first African American female doctor to receive a medical patent.
Her life began in Harlem on November 4, 1942. ....
