Luzerne County school districts getting $130 million in coronavirus relief

Luzerne County school districts will get a total of more than $130 million in coronavirus relief funding from the American Rescue Plan, according to a preliminary estimate from U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-8, Moosic.
Hazleton Area School District is getting the most with more than $37 million, and Wilkes-Barre Area is next with more than $32 million. The state Department of Education is slated to receive $5 billion to distribute to school districts and will make the final determination of amounts sent, Cartwright said.
The legislation signed into law Thursday by President Joe Biden allocates a total of $1.9 trillion. Cartwright said âa core pillar of the American Rescue Plan is to provide the resources necessary to help more schools reopen safely, keep them open safely and make up for time lost out of the classroom.â ....

Luzerne County COVID-19 case total up, positivity rate down

The latest seven-day total of COVID-19 cases in Luzerne County increased by 99, and test positivity was 11.6%, down slightly from 11.8% over the previous seven-day period.
Luzerne Countyâs daily average of COVID-19 hospitalizations over the seven days â Jan. 22 through Thursday â was 119.6, down from 130.6. The daily average of COVID-19 patients on ventilators was 10, up from 6.9, and the case total was 1,038, up from 937.
Luzerne County remains in the substantial transmission range, which is defined as having a test positivity rate of at least 10% or an incidence rate of at least 100 cases per 100,000 residents over seven days.
The county incidence rate was 326.4 from Jan. 22 through Thursday. The statewide incidence rate was 203, down from 248.5, and test positivity statewide was 9.3%, down from 10.4%. ....

Area school officials planning to spend COVID-19 relief funding

Area school officials are busy planning applications for the latest federal allocation of COVID-19 relief money.
School districts in Luzerne County and the Bear Creek Community Charter School will receive a total of $61.7 million, according to a preliminary estimate from the state Department of Education.
The funding is from the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Actâs Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund passed by Congress in December. Pennsylvaniaâs allocation is $2.2 billion.
Allocations will be about four times what schools received in the first round of relief funding last spring. Districts must submit applications to receive their allotments. ....
