Great Smoky Mountains National Park Superintendent Cassius Cash announced on Monday, May 17 that Alan Sumeriski has been selected as the deputy superintendent. Sumeriski has served as the Facility Management Division chief since 2007, along with multiple detail assignments as the acting deputy superintendent in the Smokies and other leadership roles at the Washington and regional offices for the National Park Service (NPS). He steps into this permanent role with a tremendous amount of knowledge regarding ongoing issues and park operations, along with park partner and community relationships.

Over 200 Acres On Long Arm Mountain Preserved At Linville Gorge In Pisgah National Forest

The Conservation Fund and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) announced the addition of 205 acres to Pisgah National Forest at Linville Gorge, buffering the adjacent Wilderness Area. Its protection secures iconic viewsheds, enhances access for recreation, and preserves wildlife habitat and water quality for the area.
In 2018, The Conservation Fund purchased the property and transferred it to USFS for their permanent protection at the end of 2020. This effort was made possible with support from the Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina, the Blue Ridge Conservancy and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, as well as funding from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund and Fred and Alice Stanback. ....

Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge's headquarters nears completion

MARION — Phase one of Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge’s face-lift is nearing completion while the second phase is on the drawing board.
The refuge staff hopes to move into its soon-to-be completed headquarters building early in 2020. The new building was constructed on the site of the old administration building on the shores of Crab Orchard Lake, just west of the current Visitor Center, located on Route 148 south of Route 13.
Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge’s administrative staff has been housed in temporary quarters since 2011.
“We hope to accept the building by the end of the calendar year and hope to move in in January,” said Justin Sexton, refuge manager. “COVID restrictions will slow us down, but early in 2021.” ....
