Swindon climate change group disbanded with political motives blamed

A climate change council sub-committee is no longer operating.
Its chairman thinks it was disbanded because of politics – but cabinet member for climate change Keith Williams denies it. He insists putting the work on a more formal and effective footing was behind the move.
When the Conservative administration set up a cross-party climate change working group in January 2019 one of its sub-groups – for buildings, industry, economy and planning – was set up and chaired by Labour councillor Jane Milner-Barry.
Coun Milner Barry – well known for her focus on the environment – said: “It had a wide remit. It was a cross-party group – the last meeting had four Labour members and four Conservatives and officers came along and I invited people who were interested from business and other groups. ....

Developer buys land for 1,500-home New Eastern Villages development

Swindon-based developer Capital Land Property Group has just bought a site on the edge of town where it plans build 1,500 houses.
The company was given planning permission last year to build Great Stall East, one of the villages in the 8,000-home New Eastern Villages expansion scheme.
It has just completed the purchase of the 212 acres of fields and farmland needed for the development, which will see 1,550 houses, a new secondary school a sports hub and a park and ride completed.
Chief executive Jeremy Francis, said: “The recent acquisition is the culmination of several years of hard work and dedication by the Capital Land team. ....

Planning applications approved and refused in Swindon this week

Archaeological review at Kimmerfields
TOWN CENTRE: Archaeologists watched and took pictures of the preliminary work at the Kimmerfields site. where ground is being cleared ready for the foundations of Zurich’s new headquarters. Some parts of the site were excavated by hand but nothing was found that could stop construction.
The Swiss insurance and finance giant had been told to maintain an archaeology watching brief at the start of work when permission was granted to redevelop the site on Fleming Way.
The report to planners at Swindon Borough Council said: “No archaeological remains of Prehistoric, Romano-British, Saxon or Medieval date were encountered during the watching brief. ....
