Namibia Pathology Institute suspends worker for meddling with Covid-19 data

RUSTENBURG - The Namibia Institute of Pathology (NIP) has suspended a worker for allegedly tampering with Covid-19 records, the state-owned enterprise said on Wednesday.
In a statement, CEO Kapena Tjombonde said the suspension was with effect from June 8.
The suspension is aimed at preserving the integrity of the investigations in progress, while maintaining stakeholder confidence, Tjombonde said.
This decision comes pursuant to preliminary internal investigations, which pointed (towards) the suspended employee using her position to tamper with information related to Covid-19 records on the NIP laboratory information system. The NIP does not condone any tampering with any of its records, process and procedures.“ ....

A team of ministry of health ambulance drivers, responsible for transporting confirmed and suspected Covid-19 cases, allegedly held a birthday party at a state-sanctioned guesthouse in violation of Covid-19 protocols.
According to an inside source, they invited a group of women to the guesthouse, which serves as an isolation unit, without adhering to any regulations.
“These guys are booked into a guesthouse near Dorado Valley, isolated from the rest of us and their families because they are high risk.
“If they want to go home for their one week off, then they are tested two days before and when the result is negative then they can go home and come back after the week off,” the source said. ....

USAID donates laboratory equipment to Namibia to test for COVID-19

Windhoek – The U.S. Government through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has donated laboratory equipment to support Namibia’s Ministry of Health and Social Services in its ongoing efforts to curb the COVID-19 pandemic.
The high-tech equipment, valued at US$422,000 (approx. N$6.2mil), consists of 30 centrifuges, 15 vortex mixers, 12 biosafety cabinets, 10 refrigerators and 10 freezers.
The equipment will be distributed throughout Namibia and will strengthen laboratory capacity, provide a safer working environment for laboratory staff, and increase the availability of temperature-controlled storage for samples and tests. ....

Covid-19 patients fined for escaping quarantine - Health

A nurse and four learners who escaped quarantine at the Roman Catholic Church Youth Centre in Rehoboth to party around town over the weekend were fined N$4 000 each for violating Covid-19 regulations.
Regional crime coordinator for Hardap, Deputy Commissioner Eric Clay, confirmed the incident, adding that police officers were also put at risk.
“The police officers who apprehended these people were now also put in isolation and must be tested,” he said.
Mathilda Beukes, who lives opposite the centre, yesterday confirmed that the learners were partying non-stop over the weekend, leaving those in the area unable to sleep. ....
