Wichita City Hall passes anti-discrimination ordinance after long, emotional debate

Jun. 15 The Wichita City Council has given tentative approval to an anti-discrimination ordinance protecting sexual, racial and other minorities, following emotional pleas from discrimination victims and at times intense debate on the council bench.
The new ordinance is designed to ban discrimination citywide on the basis of actual or perceived age, color, disability, familial status, gender identity, genetic information, national origin or ancestry, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, veteran status or any other factor protected by law.
It would apply to all workplaces, housing and public-serving businesses in the city. ....

In the midst of battling systemic racism in our communities, criminal justice reform and LGBTQ alliance building, a pandemic rages on one that disproportionately affects the Black community and LGBTQ people.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report this month detailing the underlying health conditions that increase the risk of contracting severe COVID-19 among sexual minorities. In a response by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the organization’s president Alphonso David said, “This report affirms what LGBTQ advocates and organizations have known all along: that our community is at greater risk and disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 health crisis.” ....
