More than fifty nations registered for the 2021 Optimist World Championship

There is just over a month to go before the start of the most awaited youth sailing event in the international sailing world, the Optimist World Championship. After the postponement of the regatta in 2020, Riva del Garda is getting ready to welcome the best young sailors in the world.
With registrations still open, fifty nations have already confirmed their presence for the World Championship that will start on Wednesday 30 June in the waters of Lake Garda, Italy. With qualifications, team racing and finals, the participants will be engaged in an intense series of races which will end on July 10th, when the winner of the 2021 Optimist World Championship will be announced, successor in the roll of honour to Marco Gradoni, the record holder in the Optimist Class for having sealed three Optimist World Championship titles in a row. ....

On the first anniversary of the death of volleyball stalwart Jonathan Chetcuti at 41, his loved ones have launched a grant for elite athletes that aims to pass on his passion for sports – and life in general.
Dubbed the Jonathan Chetcuti Program, the sponsorship project is the brainchild of his wife Elaine Bonello and business partner and close buddy Jonathan Dalli, who immediately knew, in that time of immense pain, that they wanted to carry on the popular man’s legacy.
Overwhelmed by emotions at the loss of someone so pivotal in both their lives, they took a backseat to settle into their new reality until a childhood friend of Chetcuti’s, Gege Gatt, stepped in to organise their thoughts. ....

International Optimist Regatta set for US Virgin Islands in June

The largest annually held little boat regatta in the Caribbean, the International Optimist Regatta (IOR), is scheduled for June 14-20, 2021 in St Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.
It was started in 1993 by a group of St Thomas Yacht Club (STYC) sailors and now hosts Oppie sailors from across the world.
It is also a significant driver of grass roots dinghy sailing in the Caribbean after McLaughlin Boat Works, who provided the regatta’s charter boats, made the boats available afterwards at affordable prices – sailing programs throughout the Caribbean bought them and took them home. ....
