BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) â Earth Day is over, but the work to keep our planet clean continues.
Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper hosted a clean-up event on Unity Island in Buffalo Saturday.
Dozens volunteers spent the day picking up trash left behind following a long hard winter here in our region.
The organization hosted similar events at parks and green space throughout Western New York.
Another clean-up event takes place next Saturday as well.

BUFFALO, N.Y., April 12, 2021 /PRNewswire/ Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper is honored to have received federal funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative totaling nearly $300,000. This grant will help the group and its partners lead an effort across the Great Lakes Basin for coordinated cleanups throughout 2022. This cleanup campaign is essential to preserving the future of the Great Lakes. It will also help keep today s drinking water resources safe and protect habitats throughout the entire interconnected Great Lakes Basin. Events run from April 24 until May 2, 2021.

WEST SENECA, N.Y. (WKBW) â A project aimed at reducing flooding in a Town of West Seneca neighborhood will soon receive over $100,000 in federal funding.
Congressman Brian Higgins (D, NY-26) announced Friday the Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper will receive $115,347 in federal funding provided through the 2020 National Coastal Resilience Fund towards its Buffalo Creek floodplain project aimed at reducing flooding in the Lexington Green neighborhood.
The Lexington Green neighborhood faces a nearly yearly threat of flooding due to Buffalo Creek.
