FAIRFAX, Va. - 
With its president saying that people have experienced extreme challenges over the past year, Sheehy Auto Stores is donating $115,500 among 22 charities throughout the communities they serve in several locations.
Those areas include Washington, D.C.; Baltimore and Hagerstown, Md., and Richmond, Va.
The donations are part of Sheehy’s Annual Giving Program. Through that program, each dealership partners with local non-profit organizations.
“We are fortunate to be able to provide some help through our annual end of the year giving campaign that supports a variety of causes.” Sheehy Auto Stores president Vince Sheehy said in a news release. ....

Nearly $2.9 Million in Federal Funding Awarded to Acquire, Rehab Affordable Homes

In August, the Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) issued a Request for Proposals to acquire, develop and rehabilitate affordable rental housing throughout Fairfax County. In the request, HCD cited the availability of nearly $2.9 million in federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) funds. At the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority’s (FCRHA’s) December 17 meeting, the Commissioners approved the award of available funds as follows:
$445,485 to Sunrise Community of Virginia, Inc.
Funds will be utilized to acquire and renovate a single-family home to provide community living for five individuals with incomes at or below 30 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI) – roughly $37,800 – and with medically complex intellectual and physical development disabilities. ....

MOUNT VERNON, VA Mattie Palmore, an advocate for domestic violence victims and active community member, was honored by United Community with the 2020 Gerry Hyland Humanitarian Award.
Palmore was recognized for her lifelong service and dedication to the Mount Vernon and Gum Springs community. The Honorable Gerry Hyland presented her with the award Thursday on a Zoom call with remarks from Chairman Jeff McKay and others.
The criteria for the Gerry Hyland Award is that an individual, through their personal effort will have demonstrated a long-term, sustained commitment to serving people in need through empowering, transforming and enriching their lives, said United Community President and CEO Alison DeCourcey. I can think of few better examples of that than Mattie Palmore. ....
