GTMF trombonist to share his 'Hallucinations'


Back in the year 2000, when famed conductor-pianist Daniel Barenboim was still music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, he led the group in a performance of Leopold Mozart’s Concerto for Alto Trombone, with Australia-born trombonist Michael Mulcahy soloing. Barenboim was impressed enough with Mulcahy’s playing to invite him to commission a piece on behalf of the orchestra.
“So I made a list of people,” candidate composers, Mulcahy said, “but then I got a little paralyzed.”
Some years went by — actually, something like 10 years went by — before a CSO administrator commented on the trombonist’s seemed suffering over the selection. He even gave him an out, saying he didn’t have to go through with the commission project. But Mulcahy redoubled and, a few more years later, finally settled on fellow Australian Carl Vine. ....

The Soraya, located at the California State University, Northridge campus, announced it is celebrating both its 10th Anniversary and its reopening with a special gift of five free concerts to welcome back and thank its loyal audience.
These concerts will be presented throughout the fall season and feature the Saturday, Oct. 16 Opening Night with Afro Latin Jazz master Arturo O’Farrill, the L.A. Philharmonic’s Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen leading the Colburn School Orchestra, Christmas in Vienna with the legendary Vienna Boys Choir and the annual holiday celebration Nochebuena with Ballet Folklorico de Los Angeles and Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéller. ....

The conductor and pianist Steuart Bedford has died

Steuart Bedford, who conducted the world premiere and first recording of Benjamin Britten’s final opera,
Death in Venice, in 1973, has died. He was 81.
The grandson of the opera singer Liza Lehmann and the composer, author, miniature painter and inventor Herbert Bedford, son of the singer Lesley Duff, and brother of the composer David Bedford and singer Peter Lehmann Bedford, Steuart Bedford studied at Oxford University and the Royal Academy of Music. He made his conducting debut in 1964, at the helm of the Oxford Chamber Orchestra. From 1965 to ’67, he was on the staff at Glyndebourne, and made his professional conducting debut in 1967. From 1965 he was a professor at the Royal Academy. ....
