Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) is out of maintenance at Norfolk Naval Shipyard and will enter the basic pre-deployment training cycle, after a seven-month maintenance period extended to 10 months due to material challenges, USNI News understands.
Truman went into the repair yard in July 2020 following back-to-back deployments that included loitering off the coast of Virginia to remain COVID-free in the early days of the pandemic last year. The availability, despite the heavy operations ....

USS Harry S. Truman Departs Norfolk Naval Shipyard > United States Navy > News-Stories


Since arriving at Norfolk Naval Shipyard on July 7, 2020, the NNSY-Truman partnership effort, dubbed the “Truman Project” in industry terms, successfully completed a record-breaking quantity of maintenance work and multiple equipment testing evolutions never previously attempted during a maintenance availability.
“It’s not hard to see why Truman’s crew was recently declared the best in the Atlantic Fleet with the 2020 Battenberg Cup Award,” said Capt. Kavon Hakimzadeh, Truman’s commanding officer. “Their teamwork always shines through in overcoming challenges to the mission. I’m both honored and humbled to be part of this dedicated group!”
In total, the Truman Project completed well over 300,000 man-days of maintenance during the maintenance availability in a shorter timeline than the Planned Incremental Availabilities that aircraft carriers typically conduct at the end of three-year deployment cycles, providing a more rapid return to operational readin ....

The Navy faces a conundrum in renovating its centuries-old public shipyards.
On one hand, the sooner the yards are redesigned with more efficient layouts and overhauled to have the latest tools and machines, the sooner yard employees can start repairing submarines and aircraft carriers at a faster pace and dig out of the maintenance backlog that plagued the sea service throughout the last decade. ....
