Big cat sightings reported in south London

The beast - dubbed the Palace Puma - was sighted in some woodland by journalist Helen Barrett, 41, who was out for a walk with her family.
They were so terrified that they fled from the “wild animal” - described as black and 5ft in length - after it approached them on a pathway between Church Road and Auckland Hill at 3.45pm.
Mrs Barrett said: “It was quite alarming.
At first we couldn’t believe what we were seeing.
It was black, the size of a labrador, but walking like a cat.
It had to be feline.”
She thought it must be a puma or panther. ....

Erith schoolgirl freed from underneath fallen tree by binmen

A schoolgirl was freed from underneath a fallen tree in Erith thanks to a team of binmen and members of the public.
The victim, a year ten pupil at nearby King Henry School, found herself stuck underneath a tangle of branches on the pavement, as 40mph winds swept across south east London.
Stuart Burns, 68, who lives nearby in Northumberland Heath, came across the scene as he drove past.
He said: “I got out my car, rushed over to help her and there was just one other man around.
“The girl was in a lot of pain and trapped underneath.
“I said to the other man that I would try and lift it off her and he could drag her out. ....

As we close out the last week of turbulent 2020, there are 15 boxes stacked precariously on a couch in the small living room of this house. There are another 20 or so identical boxes crammed floor-to-ceiling in a dark corner of the basement. All of them contain what I refer to grandiosely as “my papers.”By that I mean a lifetime’s accumulation of letters, newspaper clippings, reporter’s notebooks, photocopied articles, three-ring binders, file folders, photographs, ID cards and driver’s licenses, magazines and journals (Gramophone, The Armchair Detective, Studies in Bibliography), drafts of short stories and poems and even a few elementary school compositions and college essays. Everything has been stashed away higgledy-piggledy, a system that I’ve been known to rationalize by murmuring a line from poet Wallace Stevens: “A great disorder is an order.” ....
