I kept hearing the word “resilient” and thought about how perfectly that word describes my mother, born in 1911. I decided to make a handmade book about her life,
My Resilient Mother.
I made paste papers in a springy pattern, a way of showing resilience as colorful and lively. I worked on the writing a little at a time and selected photographs that set up like a little display in this accordion book, one of my favorite book forms. As I was writing, I kept thinking of all of her sayings, such as “Don’t wish your life away.” ....

Community news briefs: Hypertherm’s HOPE Foundation has new leader

HANOVER Barbara Couch, who founded the Hypertherm Owners’ Philanthropic Endeavors Foundation, is stepping down after leading the nonprofit organization for a decade. Jenny Levy, Hypertherm’s vice president of people, community, and environment, who has worked at Hypertherm since 2004, will take her place, according to a news release.
The HOPE Foundation provides money for nonprofit organizations and projects in the area. Hypertherm employees play a role in deciding where the funding goes. The three focuses of the organization are STEM education, substance use disorders and early childhood development. ....
