Norwich Unitarians gave $45,000 to Human Services through pandemic

A series of donations, in particular, has stood out.
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Norwich has given $45,000 to the department through the pandemic.
“For a small church, that was a ton of money,” Gomes said.
Even though Norwich Human Services is a part of the city, Gomes said the department relies on grant funding - it receives $22,000 annually for making assistance payments. Grants have conditions, too, whereas Gomes said the department can spend donations to help as they want.
“There are certain people who wouldn’t qualify under more stringent programs, so this gave us the latitude to make good decisions on other people in our community who needed help,” Gomes said. ....

Norwich Norwich Human Services announced several COVID-19 vaccination clinics and testing sites over the next two weeks.
The Uncas Health District will hold a COVID-19 vaccination clinic with the Moderna vaccine at the Rose City Senior Center, 8 Mahan Drive, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday. Register through the state Vaccine Administration Management System, or VAMS, or by calling the Uncas Health District nurse at (860) 823-1189, ext. 106.
Griffin Health will hold a COVID-19 vaccination clinic giving the Moderna vaccine from noon to 4 p.m. Friday at the Rose City Senior Center. Walk-ins are welcome, but attendees are asked to call Norwich Human Services at (860) 823-3778 to register if possible. ....

As COVID-19 vaccines become increasingly available, the issue turns from how much there is to who is able to get them.
Many in the community are making sure that people who may have a more difficult time accessing them can get them.
“We want to be able to make things even across the board and we want to reach out to these underserved populations,” said Joseph Zuzel, the manger of community health for the east region for Hartford Healthcare.
Zuzel said the key to addressing vaccine inequities is access and education.
“We’re working hard to do what we can to make vaccines equal to everyone,” Zuzel said. ....

As Black History Month draws to a close, I am reminded that my former hometown has been blessed with many, many prominent and accomplished Black citizens who have had such a positive impact on our lives in Norwich.
It is fair to say that members of Norwich’s Black population have made significant impacts locally, statewide and even nationally in various fields, ranging from education and social services to politics and and the arts, to social services and civil rights.
Some, like Virginia Christian, the first elected Black City Councilor in eastern Connecticut, made their marks more than a half-century ago and paved the way for the likes of Jacqueline Caron, who would serve multiple Council terms years later. ....
