Twice now in less than two months, calls to the Metro Nashville Police Department about a person experiencing a mental health crisis have led to officers shooting the person in crisis.
On March 12, 33-year-old Melissa Wooden called 911 and made comments to dispatchers about harming herself specifically, she said she hoped police would come and shoot her to death. Three Madison precinct officers responded to the 2800 block of Greer Road in the Goodlettsville area, where they found Wooden, a white woman, standing near the road with a pickax and a baseball bat. Footage from a body camera worn by Officer Ben Williams shows him arriving on the scene as another officer is shouting at Wooden to “Step away from my car!” Williams begins engaging with her more calmly, and as she makes repeated comments urging the officers to kill her, Williams tells her that’s not going to happen.  ....

How Nashville aims to make its teachers the 'best paid in the state'

Nashville teachers will see a pay increase every year under a new plan paid for by Mayor John Cooper s proposed $50 million investment in teacher compensation announced Thursday.
Teachers will see on average a $6,900 increase this year as the city and the district seek to provide competitive, living wages to its educators.
The nearly $50 million needed to revamp the district s pay structure is made possible by an already recovering economy and the city s strengthened faith in the public school system, the school board and the leadership of Director of Schools Adrienne Battle.
The proposed pay increase and new salary structure will impact all certified staff, including teachers, librarians, school counselors and social workers. But the proposal does not include classified support staff or certified administrators. Instead, those employees would receive a 2% cost-of-living increase in addition to annual step pay increases in the proposed budget. ....

Advocates from community organizations Stand Up Nashville and The Equity Alliance hosted a press conference Monday criticizing the city’s lack of transparency and community involvement in a recently publicized Oracle development deal. Speakers at the event, which took place at the proposed site of the project, also raised concerns about the potential impact the tech giant’s move could have on Nashville’s working-class citizens, and asked how many of the 8,500 jobs promised by the company will actually go to Davidson County residents. ....
